Thirty-four Community Leaders Selected As National Finalists For Leadership for a Changing World Award Recognized For Outstanding Community Leadership Washington, D.C. – After an extensive national search, 34 leaders were named national finalists in the Leadership for a Changing World awards program. Leadership for a Changing World is a program of the Ford Foundation in partnership with the Advocacy Institute and the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University. The program recognizes extraordinary leaders or leadership teams across the United States who are changing lives and transforming communities — often against great odds. “Leadership is alive and well in America, but it defies the outdated definitions of leadership” said Kathleen D. Sheekey, President and CEO of the D.C.-based Advocacy Institute. “In the post-Sept. 11 era, we’re more aware than ever that celebrity doesn’t equal leadership and that leadership comes in many forms.” The 34 finalists were selected in a highly competitive process from a pool of over 1400 nominations. Each finalist is now eligible to become one of the twenty national award winners who will receive $100,000 each to advance their work and an additional $30,000 for supporting activities. The final winners will be announced on October 1, 2002. Leadership for a Changing World hopes to ignite a new conversation about the importance of community leadership, one that encourages people to appreciate that leadership comes in different forms and from many different communities. With this vision, LCW:
During a six-year period, the $22 million Leadership for a Changing World program will recognize 60 outstanding leaders and leadership teams that are not broadly known beyond their immediate community or field. The program also includes a major, multi-year, collaborative research initiative that will work with awardees to explore how leadership is created and sustained. In addition, numerous forums will bring awardees together with other leaders to share experiences, address specific challenges and explore opportunities for collaboration.
